Manifold Pressure Sensor (MAP Sensor)
What Does The MAP Sensor Do?
The MAP sensor measures air pressure within the air intake manifold, and relays this information to the ECU. The ECU then utilises this information to calculate the air density and the engines air flow rate. It then adjusts the fuel and ignition metering for optimum engine performance.
Where is The MAP Sensor Located?
Most MAP sensors are fitted directly on the engine bulkhead. Newer vehicles often have the MAP sensor located on the air intake manifold.
What Are The Failure Symptoms Of The MAP Sensor?
A failed MAP sensor can cause poor engine operation, with stuttering or stalling. There may also be a large increase in fuel consumption.
Maintenance Of The MAP Sensor
The MAP sensor should be checked regularly, during an engine tune up or at every 25,000 miles. Check the sensor itself for any exterior damage, or for any corroded or loose wires or terminals. Also check the air hose attached to the sensor for any damage or blockages.
What Else is The MAP Sensor Commonly Called?
The MAP sensor is commonly referred to as the Vacuum Sensor; Pressure Sensor; Load Sensor; or Barometric Sensor.
